Shooting of prairie dogs is illegal on public lands from March 1-June 14. The seasonal closure, enacted by the Colorado Wildlife Commission, protects the animals and their dependent young during breeding season. The closure doesn’t affect private property, where landowners are allowed to control the animals year-round to prevent habitat damage.
