Lloyd Voss, a defensive end-tackle who played the last of his nine NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos, died Thursday of complication of liver and kidney failure. He was 65.

Selected by Vince Lombardi in the first round of the 1964 draft, Voss played two seasons with the Green Bay Packers then was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he played six seasons. He joined the Broncos in 1972, starting eight games and making 36 tackles for a team that finished 5-9.

“We needed all the help we could get in ’72 and Lloyd helped us,” said Billy Thompson, a 13-year Broncos defensive back and currently the team’s alumni director. “”He was a big guy, very pleasant. Everybody got along with him. He was one of those guys you remember.”

Voss then played one season in the World Football League, before settling in the Pittsburgh area and working 26 years for a local parks and recreation department. He is survived by two daughters and a son.
