“Joel Quenneville and the Avalanche coaching staff are not getting enough criticism. I’m no fan of goalie Jose Theodore, but he never was given any kind of long-term chance. Coach Q has made head cases of Marek Svatos and John-Michael Liles, while moving Wojtek Wolski in and out of the doghouse. Our future is these kids. Let’s get some coaches in here who can work better with the kids and have a better understanding of how to play the game in the new NHL. There’s no evidence the Avs have any kind of plan or system. It’s time to get the broom out.”
Ron, Colorado Springs
Kiz: What do husbands of Lisa Marie Presley, 33-cent pens and NHL coaches have in common? All are disposable items. A coach paid to baby-sit young players usually gets dumped long before the talent grows up.
Plummer not political
“Do you think maybe Jake ‘The Snake’ Plummer’s retirement could be a serpent move to get freedom, then pick and choose among backup quarterback offers in 2008?”
Jerry, Wheat Ridge
Kiz: The answer is no. He might be a “Snake,” but there’s not a political bone in his body. Plummer answers to what’s in his gut, rather than probe the dark recesses of his brain for a clever little scheme. Remember how our quirky QB spontaneously responded to that heckler in the stadium? Well, in quitting, Plummer gave the same mile-high salute to coach Mike Shanahan.
Nuggets’ glue gone
“I miss Andre Miller and Earl Boykins. The Nuggets clearly were a more cohesive and better team than they are now with Allen Iverson. I don’t blame Iverson; he works hard. But it’s so clear the team misses its former point guards. Miller provided solid floor leadership and excellent passing. He was the glue that kept this team together. Denver has gone from having one of the more explosive benches in basketball to perhaps the worst bench in the league. I can remember so many games Boykins kept the Nuggets in the game with his scoring off the bench. This team is pathetic: poor defensively, selfish and doesn’t play very hard. Who in his right mind would pay $75 to watch this?”
Chip, Littleton
Kiz: After trading for A.I., it took the Nuggets almost two months to figure out his best position is point guard. Talk about things that make you go hmm. While coach George Karl tinkers, 75 bucks often gets you what appears to be an exhibition game. And you can bet franchise owner Stan Kroenke shares your dislike for charging a hefty admission price to watch his team practice being selfish.
Clothes with clout
“Do the clothes and apparel worn by athletes influence how society dresses?”
Hannah, Conifer
Kiz: My initials aren’t GQ. Nobody has ever mistaken me for fashionable. I didn’t even know how low my chain was supposed to hang until Jibbs told me. But, when dressing, I live by one simple rule: What would Clinton Portis wear?
Parting shot
And today’s parting shot reflects on the death of Broncos running back Damien Nash at age 24, which prompted one reader to ponder the meaning of it all.
“What is worse? Dying young, or not knowing where you will spend eternity after you die?”
