Bye-bye, fashion show

After 34 years with a fashion show as the principal fundraiser, the leaders of Newborn Hope have opted for a change in 2007. President Vicki Buchmann of Aurora is announcing that an Oct. 11 concert with performances by Up With People and the Colorado Children’s Chorale will take the place of the annual Newborn Hope Fashion Show. The event, chaired by Lisa Trask and Candy Palazzo, will be at Newman Center for the Performing Arts on the University of Denver campus and will also feature music by the Hazel Miller Band. Last year Newborn Hope contributed $279,000 to agencies around the state that work to prevent premature births and treat critically ill newborns.

Isn’t it nice?

That Jill and Ernst Behr and Gretchen and Cal Pope were able to pull off a surprise dinner party at Glenmoor Country Club to fete retired ob-gyn Max Bartlett on his 80th birthday … That the Colorado Ballet Auxiliary’s 11 Les Petites Fleurs also had a surprise in store: After they were introduced by Dr. Toby Cole onstage at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House, Max, the main character in “Where the Wild Things Are,” crowned each of them with a beautiful wreath of spring flowers … That for the remainder of the year, all three locations of the Purple Martini will be donating $1 from every Cure Martini sold to breast cancer research. The nightclubs are located in the Tabor Center, Denver Tech Center and Boulder’s 29th Street Mall.
