German airline Lufthansa will begin offering today a $481 special introductory fare to celebrate its new direct flight from Denver to Munich.
The round trip fare is available for departures March 31 – the day the new route debuts – through May 12 and includes all taxes and fees.
“The flights are filling up,” Lufthansa spokeswoman Jennifer Urbaniak said. “We certainly are pleased with the advanced bookings so far.”
Lufthansa first announced the nonstop daily service from Denver International Airport to Munich in November.
The German airline received a $2 million incentive package from the airport and city and state economic development offices to begin the Munich route.
The flights will generate roughly $108 million in annual economic impact for the region, according to the Metro Denver Economic Development Corp.
To celebrate the inaugural flight, delegations of business and tourism leaders from both regions will take the roughly 10-hour flight on Lufthansa’s 241-seat Airbus A340-300 into DIA on March 31.
A dozen local delegates – including representatives from the state’s economic-development office and the Denver Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau – plan to fly over to Munich on March 28. While there, the group will tour the region, including the BMW factory in Munich.
The German delegation – which also will include several travel writers – is scheduled to stay in Denver through April 3. Activities planned for the visitors include tours of the Denver Art Museum and the Coors Brewery, a day trip to the city-owned Winter Park Resort and dinner at the Brown Palace Hotel.
“Munich is really a hub that gives us another gateway into Europe, particularly into Italy,” said Richard Scharf, head of the convention bureau. “This flight will help introduce a lot of new tourists to Denver and Colorado.”
