Denver is about to be Magazine City.

The City and Regional Magazine Association hits town for a convention May 5-7. Hundreds of ‘ziners from all over will be here to glad-hand, backslap and collect awards. Denver’s 5280 is up for three awards this year.

And Denver itself is getting more mags. Colorado Dog launches Friday with a party at Prime 121. Woof woof.

Bloom Media is set to launch Shine in June. Billed as Denver’s “first luxury lifestyle publication,” it’s an oversized glossy covering architecture, interior design, fashion, the arts, entertainment, dining, society, philanthropy and travel. These are a few of my favorite things.

It’ll come out five times a year, appeal to young society types and reach more than 180,000 people with incomes over $200,000 and a net worth of $2.2 million. Guess I won’t be getting a subscription.

And Niche Media – Jason Binn’s high-profile concern that publishes the glossy luxe-life mags Aspen Peak, Vegas, Gotham, Los Angeles Confidential, Hamptons, Boston Common – is dreaming up a Denver edition of Aspen Peak. But they aren’t talking about it.

Where’s the hate?

Frank Rich, former New York Times theater critic and its current lefty political columnist, was booked to speak in Denver on March 18. It was a $48-a-head funder for the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, followed by a $1,000-a-head private dinner for 12 at Restaurant Kevin Taylor. But not enough people got on board, and the date has been canceled.

You’d think there are enough anti-Bushites in Denver to fill a ballroom, just to share the hate.

“At the end of the day, the venue was too small and I had to charge too much for tickets,” says DCPA prexy Randy Weeks. “We tried to sell it through e-mail, and it just didn’t work. I take full responsibility for this.”

Pet cemetery

It was with great hoopla that Lily the Jack Russell retired from her position as director of pet relations for Hotel Monaco last week. Both Denver dailies covered it, as well as USA Today and all Denver TV stations.

On Friday, it was announced that the new pet director would be Georgie the Golden Shih Tzu. But Georgie died Tuesday after getting neutered, just a few days on the job.

“It’s just incredibly sad,” says hotel spokesman Allison Johnson. “The entire Monaco family is grieving.”

Seeing stars

Friday and Saturday bring the annual Aspen Celebrity Downhill. Big parties come down at the Caribou Club, at the St. Regis and on the slopes with the likes of David Alan Grier, Dean Cain, Judge Joe Brown, Drew Fraser, Billy Kidd, Chad Lowe, Bill McCuddy, Karl Mecklenburg, Rob Morrow and John Oates.

City spirit

The Broadmoor’s Weekend of Jazz is tonight through Saturday with Earl Klugh, Dotsero, Steve Tyrell. … Catch Pete Martinez at Lannie’s Sunday night. … The Cherry Tomato celebrates 10 years in the biz with a cocktail party Monday night. … Tix on sale 10 a.m. Saturday for The Fray’s Aug. 4 and 5 stops at Red Rocks. … Sez who: “I don’t feel old. I don’t feel anything until about noon.” Bob Hope
