An Army sergeant who lived in Northglenn was among six soldiers killed when a bomb exploded near their vehicles in Iraq’s Salahuddin province, the 82nd Airborne Division said Thursday.

Andrew C. Perkins, 27, had lived in Northglenn a few months before enlisting in the Army, according to his father, Weldon Perkins of Belen, N.M.

Andrew Perkins, who died Monday, was born in Lubbock, Texas, and worked at an office-supply store in the Denver area while he prepared physically for boot camp, Weldon Perkins said.

Perkins was an anti-armor specialist and had been in the Army since April 2004.

He rose quickly in the ranks because his superiors saw him as a “go-to guy” who took responsibility and never sought out praise, his father said. His dream was to parachute out of airplanes, his father added.

He also is survived by his mother, Kathy Perkins, and his stepmother, Elizabeth Lorton, both of Belen.
