Greenwood Village-based Emergency Medical Services Corp. has received a subpoena from the Department of Justice seeking documents from January 2000 to the present.

The ambulance operator and medical staffing contractor disclosed the subpoena Thursday in its annual report. The company said the subpoena seeks documents related to the operations of its American Medical Response affiliates in New York.

Emergency Medical Services spokeswoman Deborah Hileman said the company is cooperating with the request.

“We have received several of these kinds of requests from the government over the past few years, which are not uncommon in our industry,” she said. “Our practice is to cooperate with the government, and in the past we have been successful in reaching satisfactory resolutions to these kinds of inquiries.”

Emergency Medical Services was previously investigated by the Justice Department for violating federal anti-kickback statutes by providing discounts in exchange for referrals involving Medicare-eligible patients in Texas. The company negotiated a $9 million settlement with the government in that case.

The company also has been investigated for and settled cases relating to its billing practices.

A spokesman for the Department of Justice said he could not immediately determine the nature of any investigation into the company Thursday afternoon.

Shares of Emergency Medical Services dropped 4.38 percent to close at $24.48 on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday.
