It’s a big seat to fill, but he can cover it.

Greg Moody, whose idea of a workout is staying for both acts of a touring Broadway musical, is KCNC-Channel 4’s official ambassador/rider/reporter on this year’s Ride the Rockies bicycle tour. He’s taking the place of long-time Channel 4 correspondent Larry Green, who retired last year but not before riding 20 of the 21 RTRs.

The Post ride doesn’t happen until June 17, but Moody’s in serious training. “I’m trying to build up. Last week, it was 50 miles. I hope to build up to 200 miles a week.” That would come in handy, given that this year’s ride, a circle route that starts in Frisco then hits Steamboat Springs, Craig, Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Aspen and Leadville covers 422 miles. There are hills.

Moody’s no latecomer to two-wheelers, having written five mystery novels tied to biking. Writing ain’t riding, but he’s looking forward to the trip, even planning to buy a new bike.

“You can get road bikes and touring bikes. At my advanced age, it’s called a ‘plush,’ a sedan chair that two guys carry up the hill,” he said.

OK for HD

As much as its developers and broadcasters tout HD Digital Radio, it has yet to take off. Supporters crow that there are 1,100 stations broadcasting in HD, an impressive number unless you know that there are an estimated 12,500 stations, commercial and noncommercial, across the country.

The problem: not enough low-cost digital receivers.

The HD Digital Radio Alliance hopes to fix that with an alliance with Wal-Mart, which has begun selling $190 in-car receivers in 85 markets.

Women in history

“Birth Pains,” the second installment of women’s-history specials on “KCFR Presents,” looks at the perils of childbirth for mothers living in war, poverty and disease.

It’s part of a four-part series on KCFR 1340-AM to recognize Women’s History Month.

Other one-hour episodes in the series deal with HIV/AIDS in Africa (March 19) and women taking on men’s chores in farming (March 26). All air at 9 p.m.

Around the dial

“The John Tesh Radio Show” launches on KIMN 100.3-FM on March 26. The nationally syndicated show offers “guidance and information (people) can use in their daily lives,” says his website (7 p.m.-midnight Sundays through Fridays). … Channel 4’s Josh Shea named photojournalism editor of the year by the Poynter Institute. Station management marked the occasion with a pizza party. … Quotable: “I’ve always ridden. Some years, more than others. Some years, none.” Greg Moody.
