The winner:

Kathryn Brantmeyer, Boulder

I am Lucky, the garden gnome. I reside at 2029 Pine St. in Boulder. For many years I lived deep within the trunk of a tall pine tree. Recently, a mighty storm swept through and destroyed the top branches. A kindly tree cutter saw the top of my red hat and carved the tree stump around me and my friends. Today, I play my magical recorder and attract many unusual creatures. An elf wears the green hat and his companion is a young pterodactyl, also thought to have disappeared from Colorado.

A friend from school:

Lori and Benjamin Hunter, Boulder

The “found” gnome is in the front yard of a house across the street from Whittier Elementary School. The gnome is carved into a dead tree and blesses school children coming and going with mystical music. My son attends Whittier, and I’ve attached a photo of the two of us on our Colorado road trip vacation.
