Kearney, Neb. – Adams State junior Jared Deaguero, a two-time state champion at Adams City High School, earned a 9-1 major decision over Nebraska-Omaha’s Austin Boehm in the 184-pound division to win a national title at the NCAA Division II wrestling championships Saturday at the Health and Sports Complex.
Deaguero’s win lifted the Grizzlies past conference rival Chadron State into fifth place in the team standings, Adams State’s best finish since joining Division II in 1992. Adams State’s 58.5 points edged sixth-place Chadron State (58).
Central Oklahoma won the team title with 124.5 points, Nebraska-Kearney was second at 108.5 and Nebraska-Omaha was third with 67.5.
Lacrosse
The 18th-ranked Denver men’s team put together a four-goal rally in the second half, but visiting Stony Brook held on for an 11-8 win in front of 1,018 fans at Barton Stadium.
Ilija Gajic, Jon Paulson and Charley Dickenson notched two goals apiece for the Pioneers (3-3). Bo Tripodi’s four goals led Stony Brook (2-1).
No. 18 Yale (3-0) downed Air Force (1-3) 12-9 in the opening game of the First 4 tournament in San Diego.
Track and field
Colorado’s Stephen Pifer earned a third-place finish in the men’s mile at the NCAA indoor track and field championships in Fayetteville, Ark., finishing in 4 minutes, 0.93 seconds.
Texas’ Leonel Manzano won the mile in 3:59.90.
Wisconsin won the team title with 40 points, Florida State was second with 35. Arizona State won its first women’s indoor title with 38 points, five more than LSU.
Colorado State’s Katie Lloyd finished seventh in the women’s pentathlon with 4,084 points, a school record.
CSU’s Kevin Johnson was 11th in the men’s heptathlon with 5,422 points. Air Force’s Brian Walsh followed with 4,494.
Tennis
CU’s Monica Milewski won a sixth straight No. 1 singles match, downing Missouri’s Erika Josbena 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 to lead the Buffaloes to a 6-1 win over the host Tigers. CU’s No. 30 ranking is its highest in 10 years. The Buffs are unbeaten in conference play at 4-0.
