Former University of Northern Colorado student Mitch Cozad today pleaded not guilty to charges he stabbed his rival, Rafael Mendoza, in the leg to win the starting punter position on the UNC football team last September.

Cozad’s trial for attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault is scheduled to start July 30. The trial is expected to last at least 10 days.

Cozad’s attorney, Joseph “Andy” Gavaldon, said he remains open for a plea bargain offered by the Weld County District Attorney.
