A woman driving the wrong direction on the Boulder Turnpike collided head-on with a Jeep early this morning, killing the passenger in her car.

Westminster police said the passenger, a 27-year-old male whose identity has not been released yet, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Rachel Wilson, 21, drove her 1997 Honda Civic west onto the eastbound lanes of U.S. 36, just east of the Wadsworth Boulevard intersection, near the Broomfield Events Center. Police did not say why they thought she was headed in the wrong direction, but said the use of drugs and alcohol are part of their investigation.

Wilson was taken to a local hospital with severe injuries. Neither she nor her passenger were wearing seat belts, according to police.

Police said the site of the crash was on a slight hill that impeded vision to about 300 feet.

Ronald F. Hamilton, 49, was headed east in the left lane in a 1997 Jeep Wrangler when he crested the hill and did not have enough time to avoid a collision with Wilson. Hamilton, who was wearing a seatbelt, received minor injuries, according to police. He was alone in his vehicle.

The crash closed the heavily traveled eastbound lanes for about four hours.
