AFA hits a higher standard
I just finished reading, “Meeting challenge on, off court.” What a great tribute to the players, the coach and all the cadets at the Air Force Academy. So many times we read about the negative side of youth today; it is refreshing to read about those who get it and make the sacrifices for the greater things in life. I support these young men and women and wish them the best.

Little schools get hurt
As a member of the CHSAA committee that approved the proposal to extend the baseball season into June, I was glad to see your editorial reprimanding the board that voted it down. When the proposal was first brought before the coaches at the December CHSCA Baseball Clinic, it met with strong opposition from coaches at the big schools and schools that have extensive summer programs because of how it might interfere with their summer seasons. What is frustrating is these coaches are thinking only of themselves and not the larger picture. The smaller schools in 4A, 3A, 2A and 1A would greatly appreciate the change for the most part. For one, it would allow us to start when weather is more likely to allow a team outside and when our basketball players would be able to play. Another problem with our current start and end dates is that it is dangerous. Players who are involved with basketball do not have the time to build up their arms for games in March, thus making them more susceptible to arm injuries. Also, there are many mountain schools who rarely get to play home games because their fields aren’t clear of snow until mid-April or later.
