Broomfield – A 2-year-old girl was critically injured Monday after she fell out of a fourth-story apartment window and landed face-first on the sidewalk.

Authorities are withholding the names of the girl and her parents pending further investigation of the incident, said Broomfield police Sgt. Colleen O’Connell.

The child was airlifted by medical chopper to Children’s Hospital with “life-threatening” injuries, O’Connell said, adding that the next 24 hours will determine whether the girl survives.

Social services and police detectives questioned the girl’s father, who was home at the time, but it did not appear charges would be filed, O’Connell said.

“Right now, it appears that this was just an awful accident,” she said.

The girl’s father called 911 around 1 p.m., to The Summit At Flatirons complex in the 200 block of Summit Boulevard.

Firefighters were nearby and responded within minutes to the injured child, who was conscious and crying.

“She had severe facial trauma,” O’Connell said.

Police believe the girl had crawled on top of the family’s couch and pushed on the screen of an open window. The screen gave way, and the child plummeted about 33 feet to the ground.

It appeared she may have hit an aluminum awning jutting from the building about 9 feet above the sidewalk, which could have slowed her fall.
