The Aspen Santa Fe Ballet has canceled the Aspen Dance Festival this summer, because of a facelift under way on the Aspen District Theatre and the unavailability of a suitable, alternative venue.

The festival, one of two such events presented each summer in Colorado, ran July 11-Aug. 19 last year and included 11 performances by six companies, including Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, Ballet West and Nrityagram Dance Ensemble of India.

Aspen Santa Fe Ballet plans to return to the renovated 550-seat theater in December for its annual presentation of “The Nutcracker” and revive the summer dance festival in 2008.

The company, which usually presents two programs during the festival, will make its first appearance at the Aspen Music Festival on July 16. That performance will take place in the Benedict Music Tent on the music-festival grounds.
