The University of Denver opened Great Western Lacrosse League play Saturday with a 10-9 victory over Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., sparked by four points from senior Brandon Barcus.
The Pioneers (5-4, 1-0 GWLL) led 10-6 late in the third quarter before the Bobcats (3-3, 0-1) scored three unanswered goals to close within one at the 13:59 mark in the fourth quarter.
Two huge saves by DU sophomore Austin Konkel, from Regis High School, during the final period helped hold off Quinnipiac’s run.
Konkel, starting in goal for the first time this season, recorded nine saves.
Baseball
Right fielder Chandler Hert went 3-for-4 with two doubles and five RBIs, leading Mesa State to an 18-9 rout of CSU-Pueblo (18-11, 8-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) in Grand Junction. First baseman Curtis Englehart also shined, contributing a double, home run and four RBIs.
The Mavericks (26-4, 15-0) won the second game 3-2 on Blake Carlquist’s RBI bunt single in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Golf
The Nebraska women’s golf team has a 10-shot lead entering today’s final round of the University of Colorado Mountain View Collegiate tournament in Catalina, Ariz.
The Huskers’ 4-under-par 572 total has them 10 strokes ahead of second- place Northwestern and 18 ahead of Denver and Missouri, which are tied for eighth. Tournament host CU is tied for 12th at 594. DU’s Katie Kempter is tied for fourth in individual play with a 3-under 141 total.
Softball
Felicia Cruz hit a two-run homer to give Fort Lewis the lead en route to a 7-5 victory over host Chadron (Neb.) State in the second game of an RMAC doubleheader. The Skyhawks (10-22, 9-13) won the opener 12-3.
Tennis
The University of Colorado women’s team dropped six consecutive singles matches after winning the doubles point and lost 6-1 to No. 40 Texas (7-6, 4-0 Big 12) in Austin, Texas.
No. 20 CU (10-5, 5-2) lost its second consecutive conference match after winning five straight.
Track and field
Colorado State’s Trey Eder, Alex Godell and Nate Heyrman surpassed the regional qualifying standard in the men’s hammer throw at the Rob Upton Invitational in Fort Collins, leading the Rams to a 209-88 victory over Air Force. The CSU women defeated the Falcons 207-88.
