Denver – Colorado is getting some needed precipitation Saturday with up to 15 inches of snow predicted for higher areas from Steamboat Springs to Breckenridge.

Six to 13 inches are possible in Front Range foothills above 7,000 feet near Denver, the National Weather Service said. To the south, up to eight inches were possible in the La Garita, northern Sangre de Cristo and Wet mountains.

At lower elevations some of the precipitation was forecast to come in the form of rain.

With recent warm weather and wind melting the snowpack much faster than average, any precipitation will be welcome, although it will make driving dangerous.

As of Saturday, the state’s snowpack was 77 percent of the 30-year average. Many streams and rivers are already high due to the early snowmelt.
