LITTLETON, Colo.-

A woman trapped in a fire in her living room died Sunday after her husband was unable to rescue her, firefighters said.

The husband was taken to a hospital with burns and possible smoke inhalation, Littleton Fire Rescue Fire Marshal Jim Hofstra said.

The fire appeared to be accidental and may have been started by smoking, but investigators were waiting to speak with the husband, Hofstra said.

The man, described as elderly, called for help after finding a fire around his wife, who was sitting in a chair in the living room, Hofstra said.

It was not immediately known whether the woman was conscious when the husband found her. The man tried to rescue his wife but was driven back by flames and smoke, Hofstra said.

Their names were not released.
