The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes and quarterback Kelly Holcomb from the Buffalo Bills on Monday night for defensive tackle Darwin Walker and a conditional draft pick in 2008.
“This is something that has been brewing,” Bills general manager Marv Levy said. “Takeo is a good person, but we wanted to strengthen our defensive tackle. They’ve been looking for a linebacker and I think they wanted an experienced backup quarterback.”
A nine-year NFL veteran, Spikes was slow recovering last year from a right Achilles tendon tear he suffered in Week 3 of the 2005 season. He’s scheduled to make $9.5 million ($4.5 million this season) over the final two years of the six-year contract he signed after joining the team as a free agent.
Holcomb did not play last season, but completed 155 of 230 passes for 1,509 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 2005. He joins A.J. Feeley on the quarterback depth chart behind Donovan McNabb.
Walker started 15 games and was tied for second on the Eagles with six sacks, and had 56 tackles.
Titans: Adam “Pacman” Jones could face felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from a triple shooting at a strip club in February.
Police are seeking a felony charge of coercion and misdemeanor threat and battery charges against the cornerback in the 5 a.m. shooting at Minxx, Lt. George Castro said.
Castro said detectives haven’t determined who fired the shots that wounded three people, one critically, outside the Las Vegas club during the NBA All-Star Weekend. Castro said the request for charges will be submitted to Clark County district attorney David Roger no later than the end of the week.
Saints: The team will stay in Louisiana through the 2010 season, reaching an agreement with state officials. Both sides agreed to toss out contract clauses that would have allowed the team to leave the state within the next four years.
Rams: As expected, running back Marshall Faulk announced his retirement, finishing ninth on the NFL’s career rushing list, 33 yards behind Jim Brown.
Faulk, the 2000 NFL MVP, is fourth in combined yards from scrimmage with 19,154 yards and his 6,875 yards receiving are the most among running backs.
Jets: New York signed defensive end Andre Wadsworth to a contract.
The 32-year-old Wadsworth, the No. 3 overall pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 1998 draft, hasn’t played in the NFL in six seasons after undergoing multiple knee operations.
Steelers: Free-agent safety Tyrone Carter re-signed with Pittsburgh, inking a three-year contract.
Lions: Detroit signed free-agent guard Zach Piller to a one-year deal.
Redskins: Free-agent tackle Jason Fabini signed with Washington.
Texans: Houston re-signed fullback Vonta Leach, matching an offer sheet the free agent signed with the New York Giants.
