LYNCHBURG, Va.-
Ritchie McKay was hired as Liberty University’s basketball coach Monday after his dismissal last month at New Mexico.
He succeeds Randy Dunton, whose contract was not renewed. Dunton had a 66-85 record at Liberty since becoming coach in 2002. The evangelical school went 14-17 this year, 8-6 in the Big South Conference.
McKay had an 82-69 record in five seasons at New Mexico. He led the team to a Mountain West Conference championship in 2005. The Lobos have had two losing seasons since, going 15-17 this year.
McKay previously coached Portland State, Colorado State and Oregon State.
“He brings with him a wealth of experience that will allow our basketball program to move to the highest level,” Liberty athletic director Jeff Barber said.
