“Voodoo” politics

A discussion on House Bill 1036, which restricts the government’s ability to acquire water rights through eminent domain, brought to mind the old Cole Porter hit “You Do Something to Me.”

“Water law in Colorado is pretty similar to voodoo,” Sen. Ken Gordon, D-Denver, remarked during the Democratic caucus Monday.

“Actually, a lot of people understand voodoo,” Sen. Jim Isgar, D-Hesperus, responded.

Now, cue the band, and the Porter vocals:

Do do that voodoo

that you do so well.

For you do something to me

that nobody else could do!

You do something to me,

something that simply mystifies me.

Tell me, why should it be

you have the power to hypnotize me?

Can we quote you on that?

“We can’t do anything anyway – why bother?”

– Sen. Nancy Spence, R-Centennial, on missing senators from GOP caucus on the state budget
