Phoenix – Yorvit Torrealba’s hard luck continued this afternoon.

The Rockies’ catcher crumbled to the ground with a sprained right ankle while hustling to first base on a ground ball in the fifth inning against Oakland. Torrealba appeared to land awkwardly on the first-base bag.

The Rockies said Torrealba would be reevaluated Tuesday morning.

Torrealba was on the ground for several minutes before manager Clint Hurdle helped him limp off the field. The injury occurred with just five games remaining in the exhibition season.

Torrealba is expected to see significant action this season as a backup to rookie Chris Iannetta.

Last season, Torrealba came into spring training as the No. 1 catcher but was hindered by right shoulder problems throughout the season. He had two stints on the disabled list and played in only 65 games.

Inside the game

When rookie pitcher Jason Hirsh fails to throw on a downhill plane, he gets lit up.

That’s what happened this afternoon in his start against the A’s. In his first five innings, Hirsh, the No. 4 starter, gave up three homers, one each to Eric Chavez, Milton Bradley and Nick Swisher.

By the numbers: 5

That’s how many homers outfielder Brad Hawpe has hit this spring. The fifth came today off of A’s left-hander Jay Marshall.

The Rockies’ club record for spring homers is 10 by Andres Galarraga in 1996.
