Former Denver Post all-staters Michael Hunter and Pierre Curtis have been named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Freshmen All- American basketball team.

Hunter, formerly of Smoky Hill in Aurora, plays for Cal-Irvine, and Curtis, who starred at East, plays for James Madison.

Both guards, they are two of 16 players on the team selected by a group that includes Division I coaches and NBA scouts.

Hunter, 5-foot-10, started the season’s final 17 games, averaged 6.8 points and led the Anteaters with 73 assists and 32 steals.

Curtis started every game and averaged 11.4 points, 2.4 rebounds and a team-leading 3.7 assists. He also led the Dukes in playing time, averaging 35.5 minutes – the No. 2 all-time mark for a James Madison freshman.

He set a school freshman record by starting 30 times and his 112 assists are third all-time for James Madison freshmen. His 124 free throws made and 165 attempted rank second for James Madison freshmen and seventh on the school’s all-time season list.

Scholarship winners

Ruby Miller scholarship winners (senior girls who express a desire to go into coaching) were announced recently by the Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports.

Amanda Brown, Limon; Christine Hormann, Cherokee Trail; Danika Jostes, Stratton; and Crystal Loch, Alamosa, each received $750.

This year’s golf tournament fundraiser, the fifth annual Ruby Miller Scholarship Scramble, will be held June 8 at Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada. Contact Mary Kvamme at 303-421-8392 for information.

Also, Terri Ward, CCGS president since 1999 and basketball coach at Niwot for 17 years, has been named the CCGS Helen McCall coach of the year.

Ward graduated as a three- sport athlete from Niwot in 1976, went on to Northern Colorado and taught in New Mexico two years before assisting University of Colorado women’s basketball coach Ceal Barry for eight years. Ward also worked with USA Basketball and coached volleyball and track for nine years at Niwot.

Big name

On Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Pomona fell 2-1 to Westminster High School of St. Louis in baseball.

The winning pitcher was Drew Benes, son of former Cardinals pitcher Alan Benes and nephew of Andy Benes, who pitched in the major leagues for 14 years.
