Dater clearly punch-drunk
Regarding Adrian Dater’s column last Sunday on fighting in hockey, he appears to have suffered some brain trauma himself.
His statement that “bench-clearing brawls used to happen almost every game” is not remotely close to a factual statement. To quote Craig MacTavish saying, “Every night, there was a brawl or something” is just nonsense used to support his weak position for his weak sport.
The NHL is in its current pitiful state for two reasons: 1) overexpansion, and 2) its assimilation of this WWF goon mentality. It wouldn’t take very much to remove goons from hockey. Tie their on-ice production (goals, assists, plus/minus ratings, etc.) to their penalty minutes. The goons will stand out like the open wounds they are in what was a great sport. Get them out of hockey. No one is suggesting legislating the physical nature out of hockey. Just the stupidity.

Frei way off base(ball)
Baseball is no longer the national pastime as Terry Frei concludes. Four-hour games are way too boring and the season is too long. NFL and college football rule. Even Major League Soccer is gaining ground on baseball – the new Rapids stadium and upcoming season seems way more exciting than any Rockies happenings.
Baseball and hockey lost me the last time they had strikes – who needs to follow a sport when the players might not show up?
