Eagles take command of CHL playoff series
Ed McGrane broke a tie with a short-handed breakaway, then added two more goals for a hat trick as the Colorado Eagles won 5-2 in a Central Hockey League first-round series game against the Youngstown SteelHounds in Ohio on Wednesday night. The Eagles lead the series 3-0.
Eagles goaltender Marco Emond saved 28-of-30 shots for his second postseason win, and Ryan Tobler added three assists as the Eagles moved within one victory of clinching the series.
Sky Sox opening tonight
The Colorado Springs Sky Sox open the 2007 Pacific Coast League season at home tonight against the defending PCL champions, the Tucson Sidewinders, at 6 p.m. at Security Service Field.
This is the 20th season for the Sky Sox in Colorado Springs, and the games will be broadcast on a new radio station, KZNT 1460 AM. Team management expects to compete for the league title with a roster filled with players with major-league experience. Players who saw time with the Rockies last season include: Denny Bautista, Ubaldo Jimenez, Alvin Colina, Omar Quintanilla, Cory Sullivan and Ryan Spilborghs. Other players who played in the majors last season are: Eric DuBose (Baltimore), Matt Herges (Florida), Mike Gallo (Houston), Bobby Keppel (Kansas City) and Alexis Gomez (Detroit).
DU third, CU sixth at BYU Dixie Classic
Stephanie Sherlock of the University of Denver shot a 1-under-par 71 in the final round of the Brigham Young Dixie Classic at Entrada at Snow Canyon in St. George, Utah, but it was not enough to hold off Arizona’s Alison Walshe. Walshe fired a 67 to pass Sherlock and claim medalist honors with a 2-under 214 total to beat Sherlock by two strokes.
Host BYU won the team event with a 14-over 878, followed by Texas Christian at 894 and Denver at 897. Colorado was sixth at 914, and Colorado State was 13th with 944.
Lindsay Senger led CU with a 10th-place finish at 225. Kasey Claussen topped the Rams with a 233, good for a tie for 32nd.
