DENVER-

Voters would be able to sign up to vote permanently by mail under a bill backed by a Senate committee Wednesday.

Currently voters are free to request an absentee ballot without providing a reason but they have to make that request before each election.

Under the measure (Senate Bill 234), voters would be able to sign up for permanent mail-in ballots once and then receive ballots for each election at least 14 days before Election Day.

The measure is being backed by the Vote By Mail Project based in Oregon, where all elections are now conducted by mail. Washington and California both offer permanent mail-in ballots to voters.
