FORT CARSON, Colo.-

Brig. Gen. Mark A. Graham, deputy commander of U.S. Army North at Fort Sam Houston in Texas, has been named the new commanding general for Fort Carson.

Graham will command Fort Carson and Division West, which is responsible for the training of all National Guard and Army Reserve forces west of the Mississippi River, the Pentagon announced Friday. He was expected to arrive in a few weeks.

He would take over from Maj. Gen. Robert W. Mixon Jr., a 33-year Army veteran who has commanded the post the past two years. It was not announced where Mixon would go next.

Graham is a veteran of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 who helped with the response to Hurricane Katrina.

In his current post at Fort Sam Houston, Graham helps direct the Army’s response to terrorist attacks and natural disasters—a mission that falls under U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs.
