For every action, there’s an equal and opposite reaction. So it only follows that the Complaint Free World movement started by Christ Church Unity in Kansas City, Mo., would spur something in the opposite direction.

Since last summer, the church has encouraged people to go three weeks without complaining and has handed out lavender rubber LIVE STRONG-style wrist bands stamped with the phrase “A Complaint Free World” to help remind participants to bite their tongues.

So far, the church has distributed about 3.6 million bracelets.

But Opportunity in Living, a Centennial nonprofit that helps find adult foster care and independent living situations for people with developmental and physical disabilities, reckons a little whining is actually good for you.

“People need to complain,” says residential director Barbara Hillman. “If you stuff it all down, you’re gonna explode.”

So here’s permission, in the form of a dark blue rubber bracelet embossed with “Complain All You Want.”

“Sometimes you can complain yourself into a solution,” observes Jennifer Lofland, who handles quality assurance for Opportunity In Living.

Our only gripe? The bracelets handed out by the church are free, but the whiner’s version runs $3 or two for $5. Proceeds do support the nonprofit, so no complaint there.
