MEAD, Colo.-
A pickup truck carrying Alameda High School band members collided with a semitrailer Saturday morning, killing the pickup truck driver.
The accident occurred around 6:30 a.m. north of Mead on northbound Interstate 25, where flurries had fallen overnight, the State Patrol said.
The pickup truck was in the right lane pulling a trailer with the band’s equipment. The trailer lost control, causing the pickup truck to lose control and jackknife into the left lane, Trooper Gilbert Mares said. A semitrailer in the left lane struck it, sending both vehicles into the median, Mares said.
The semitrailer landed on top of the pickup truck.
Mares said 36-year-old Andy Padilla of Lakewood died at the scene. A woman and three teens in the pickup were taken to a hospital in Loveland. All were wearing seat belts. They had been heading to a music competition.
The semitrailer driver wasn’t injured.
