The Colorado Division of Wildlife has lifted a seasonal closure on the Byers Canyon shooting range west of Hot Sulphur Springs. The facility has been closed since early winter to avoid disturbing wintering deer herds. These animals have moved to higher ground. Shooters should be aware that a wildlife habitat stamp is required to use the range, along with all other state wildlife areas across the state.
Turkey permit deadline
Turkey enthusiasts face a 5 p.m. Monday deadline to participate in a drawing for a private-land turkey hunt on a 500-acre property 10 miles northeast of Mancos. The land has been enrolled in a new walk-in program developed by the Division of Wildlife for the Western Slope. Successful applicants will be required to purchase a $20 walk-in permit to support this leased-land initiative. A total of 39 permits will be available, 13 each for periods April 14-29, April 30-May 13 and May 14-27. To enter, call the DOW Durango office, 970-274-0855.
