YOU CAN DO THIS

Off the Beem, down the ladder

One carrot that has dangled for players mired toward the bottom of the leaderboard is a push to move into the tournament’s top 16, which earns an automatic invitation the following year. Rich Beem appeared to be in striking distance of that Sunday, even after playing the front nine in 2-over-par 38. The dream faded quickly, however. Beem, the 2002 International champion, went bogey, double bogey, triple bogey on Nos. 10-12. He eventually finished with an 81, dropping from 34th to 54th.

YOU CAN’T DO THIS

Sandy’s just dandy on Sunday

After Saturday, Sandy Lyle, right, the 1988 champion, stood in a tie for 56th among the 60 players making the weekend cut. That lowly spot was due in large part to a third-round 80, a day that featured a five-putt on the 16th hole. On Sunday, though, Lyle, who had missed the cut in six of his previous seven appearances, bounced back with a 1-under-par 71. It was the first time in eight years that Lyle, who moved up to 43rd place with the effort, bettered par at Augusta.

HOLE OF THE DAY

No. 16, par 3, 170 yards

The 16th hole was only the 10th-toughest hole of the day, playing to a 3.2 average, but it might have been the most pivotal in deciding the winner. On Friday, Zach Johnson three-putted from a mere 3 feet; in Sunday’s final round, he sank a 10-foot birdie putt that provided enough of a cushion for a victory that was essentially assured moments later when Tiger Woods missed a makeable birdie attempt.
