Attempting to add more veteran depth, the Broncos are planning to re-sign wide receiver David Terrell.
Terrell was cut in training camp last year after playing for the Broncos in 2005.
Terrell, 28, did not play in the NFL last season after being released by the Broncos. He is expected to report to Denver for the team’s offseason workout program and take a physical Wednesday.
Terrell will be vying for a reserve spot on the roster.
The Broncos have several wide receivers, but there are some injury issues at the position. Rod Smith had hip surgery in February and won’t be ready until July. Newly signed Brandon Stokley is recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon and likely won’t be ready until the start of the season.
“David is excited for the chance to be back in Denver,” said his agent, Paul Lawrence. “He knows the system there and is excited to try to make that team again.”
Sauerbrun deal matched
With little to lose, the New England Patriots have matched the Broncos’ one-year offer to punter Todd Sauerbrun. The Patriots had until today to match.
Sauerbrun agreed to a one-year contract with Denver. But the Patriots had the right of first refusal for Sauerbrun, 34, who signed with New England in December. Sauerbrun punted for Denver in 2005, but the Broncos cut him last October after he served a four-game NFL suspension for using a banned substance.
The Patriots matched an incentive-based deal constructed by the Broncos. It featured no trade, no transition and no franchise tag clauses. Last week, Sauerbrun made it known he wanted to play for the Broncos, saying his “heart was in Denver.” Had New England not matched the deal, Sauerbrun was going to compete with incumbent Paul Ernster in Denver.
Schedule update
The NFL may release its regular-season schedule as soon as Wednesday. It will be released by April 19.
