The generation that is redefining old age is making growing old easier for its pets.

“Baby boomers are keeping their pets longer and are willing to do $5,000 surgeries on them,” says Bob Vetere, president of the American Pet Product Manufacturers Association. “There are even denture products to help keep their teeth longer.”

The website seniorpetproducts.com sells 600 products, including the top-selling diapers for dogs, and sponsors online discussions about relevant topics.

As dogs and cats get older, hip dysplasia and aching joints are common ailments that affect mobility. Now there are lots of solutions to give pets a leg up.

The company Petmate makes nonslip carpeted pet steps ($39.99) at the right height for sofas or beds. Solvit’s telescoping ramp (about $150) was designed for SUVs and vans, and some customers have used it in bedrooms too.

To help older dogs – or cats – climb out of the pool, there is Skamper-Ramp ($47 to $85). The lightweight, ribbed, white plastic ramp lets dogs and cats that go for a swim or fall in the water find an easy way out. The extra benefit: Nighttime intruders, such as possums or frogs, also can escape.
