LAS CRUCES, N.M.-

Walter Rubel has been appointed managing editor of the Las Cruces Sun-News—a job he held before heading the newspaper’s Santa Fe bureau.

“Walt is an experienced, veteran newsman who will enhance an already excellent reporting staff,” said Jim Lawitz, editor and vice president of the Sun-News. “We’re pleased to welcome him home.”

Rubel was appointed Monday to replace Martha Mauritson, who left the Sun-News in January to become managing editor of the Carlsbad Current-Argus.

Rubel, 48, was managing editor of the Sun-News from April 2002 until September 2003, when he was appointed the newspaper’s bureau chief in Santa Fe.

“While I enjoyed my stint covering state government in Santa Fe, I am excited about coming back to Las Cruces and the Sun-News,” Rubel said. “I have a great deal of respect for the reporters, photographers and editors I will be joining.

“I am also happy to be returning to Las Cruces. The community has experienced tremendous growth in the short time I was gone. The future would appear to hold great promise for both Las Cruces and the Sun-News.”

Rubel originally is from Denver, and is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo.
