With CBS 4 weatherman Dave Aguilera as master of ceremonies, of course it was going to be a beautiful night. Or so everyone would like to think after Community Sailing of Colorado staged its eighth Spirit of Sailing Gala. The 150 who attended this event honoring developer David Spira and his wife, Shirleyan Price, raised $25,000 for the sailing camps that CSC operates every summer for youngsters from low-income families. Guests included Karen Marriott, an Olympic contender in windsurfing; state Rep. Jeanne Labuda, D-Denver; and Mrs. Cherry Creek Christina Sacha. “Helping Children Find Their Way” was held at Cableland, the mansion built for telecommunications pioneer Bill Daniels that is now the official residence of the mayor of Denver. It also featured music by the Second Chance Jazz Quartet and a woodwind quintet from Denver School of the Arts, plus magic performed by Keir Royale.

Angels of the Night

Nine women who have hosted showers for Denver Health’s Newborns in Need program will be honored at Denver Health Foundation’s eighth Triumph Over Challenge Gala that takes place Saturday at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. Sharon Magness Blake, Pam Crowe, Janet Elway, Kelly Ford, Susan Kiely, Frances Owens, Debra Pain, Peggy Shanahan and Katie Trexler will be given as Angels of the Night awards for their work in securing blankets, clothing and toys for the babies born to low-income parents at Denver Health. Tickets to the dinner-dance start at $300 and can be purchased by calling Kelly Troester, 303-436-3725 … Same night, the Denver Children’s Advocacy Center is having its annual fundraiser at the Police Protective Association Event Center. There’ll be cocktails, a buffet catered by Zoka’s Restaurant, silent and live auctions, and entertainment by Colorado Children’s Chorale and puppeteer Mark Hellerstein. Gov. Bill Ritter and his wife, Jeannie, are the honorary chairmen. It’s 2-5 p.m. at Mount Vernon Country Club; the 200 guests are expected to include members of the Colorado Consular Corps, the current and former presidents of Colorado School of Mines, and other civic leaders.

Two members of the Junior League of Denver have landed nifty jobs: Sara Kidder Odendahl is the new director of communications for the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association and Tiffany Cooley has been named development director for the Denver Public Schools Foundation … Author and time-management expert Melly Kinnard of Cherry Hills Village was described as America’s “de-clutter queen” in an article appearing in Time magazine … Food Bank of the Rockies gave John Strohm and his wife, Mary Pat Link, the first Dorothy Devenish Memorial Award for service to community. The honor was celebrated at a cocktail gathering for members of FBR’s Providers Society. Carole and Bob Slosky (he chairs the food bank’s endowment fund board) were the hosts.
