University officials in northern Colorado are urging students who were at a popular concert hall last weekend to consider taking antibiotics following the death of a 20-year-old University of Northern Colorado student from meningococcal meningitis.
The Loveland student may have contracted the disease on Friday while at the Mishawaka Inn, according to a statement.
The Larimer County coroner’s office said Sierra Krizman became ill Saturday and died Tuesday at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, 9News reported.
Krizman was a commuter student at UNC and Front Range Community College.
Meningococcal meningitis, known as bacterial meningitis, is a bacterial infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord that can be treated with antibiotics.
The only way to get the contagious disease is through an infected person’s saliva, UNC health officials said.
UNC officials are asking students who shared classes with Krizman to take antibiotics, such as Cipro. Free doses of Cipro were given to about 100 students who attended a meeting Wednesday at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
