In order to bolster point guard depth, the Nuggets are expected to sign guards Von Wafer and Anthony Carter to contracts for the remainder of the season. Wafer, Carter and guard Mateen Cleaves worked out Thursday for the Nuggets in Oklahoma City, including vice president of basketball operations, Mark Warkentien. Wafer, who has worked out for the team before, said he had the understanding going into this workout that he would be signed.

The Nuggets have lacked depth at point guard ever since trading Andre Miller and Earl Boykins in December and January. Steve Blake is the only true point guard on the Nuggets’ roster, and Allen Iverson has played some point guard. DerMarr Johnson has been used in scattered situations at point guard.

Carter has played for the Miami Heat and Minnesota Timberwolves, as well as overseas, in an eight-year career. He was with the Nuggets during training camp and the preseason. “I think it’s a great situation for me,” Carter said. “I can bring a lot more to the team as far as getting the scorers the ball, picking up full court, playing great defense, things like that.”

Wafer starred with the Colorado 14ers, averaging 21.0 points and 3.3 assists. Wafer’s stint could be much more important for the future, as he looks to parlay this chance into a summer-league spot and possibly a roster spot on next year’s team.

“Most definitely,” Wafer said. “I want to work hard, do everything the coaches ask of me, work on my game.”
