FORT COLLINS, Colo.-

A 35-year-old Greeley man whose canoe overturned Saturday on Dowdy Lake died after spending more than two hours underwater.

Edwin C. Heiden, his 36-year-old brother and his 10-year-old nephew were on Dowdy Lake in the Red Feather Lakes area when the canoe flipped around 2 p.m., Larimer County sheriff’s officials and coroner’s officials said.

Another boater helped get the 36-year-old man and his son to safety, but they couldn’t find Heiden. Sheriff’s officials said only the boy was wearing a life jacket.

Heiden’s body was recovered around 4:45 p.m.

It was not immediately clear how the canoe overturned.

An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday.
