Southern Colorado station KKTV-TV and KOA-AM in Denver collected more awards than any other station Saturday during the 2006 Colorado Associated Press Broadcasters Association Awards Banquet.

KKTV, which serves the Colorado Springs and Pueblo area, and KOA captured 12 awards apiece during a ceremony held at the JW Marriott Denver at Cherry Creek.

The entries were judged by AP member broadcasters in Oregon.

Led by news director Nick Matesi, KKTV finished first in eight categories, including medium-market newscast, morning newscast and spot news reporting.

KOA, led by news director Kathy Walker, earned nine first-place awards in large-market radio, winning the newscast, morning newscast and spot news categories.

KKTV and KOA each swept their respective spot news and sports special categories.

In large-market television, Denver’s KDVR-TV topped its list of eight awards by sweeping the newscast and feature reporting categories. The FOX affiliate also finished first in spot news with its coverage of the blizzard of 2006.

KWGN-TV in Denver was awarded first place in the morning newscast category.

Top medium-market radio honors went to KMTS-FM in Glenwood Springs, which earned eight awards, including first for newscast and morning newscast. KMTS news director Ron Milhorn also swept the spot news and sports special categories.
