Mountain View, Calif. – For some TurboTax customers, Tax Day turned out to be even more stressful than they had feared. When they tried to e-file their taxes with the popular online service from Intuit, they saw error messages and many were unable to file.

The problems arose Monday night and continued through Tuesday. The front end of the TurboTax site, where people enter their tax information, was working well, but the back-end servers that electronically file to the Internal Revenue Service were running slowly.

The Mountain View, Calif., financial-software company blamed the problems on record traffic to its site. The number of TurboTax e-filers Monday was more than double the figure on the comparable day last year, far higher than its most optimistic expectations, and Tuesday’s traffic seemed similarly high.

“We understand it’s frustrating for customers. We believe that through the course of the day, all these folks will be able to meet the IRS deadline without any problems,” Intuit spokeswoman Julie Miller said.
