A man was severely burned today after his car exploded and caught on fire in Castle Rock, authorities say.

A witness reported that the man was on fire inside the car, said Cocha Heyden, spokeswoman for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

“There was a person trying to get out of the car,” Heyden said.

The explosion happened about noon near Colorado 105 and West Otter Way, according to a dispatcher for the Castle Rock Fire and Rescue Department .

The man was flown by helicopter to a local hospital, Heyden said.
