Military identifies fallen Blue Angel
Investigators looked through wreckage Sunday to determine what caused a Navy Blue Angel jet to crash during a maneuver, while the military identified the fallen pilot as a 32-year-old who was performing in one of his first air shows with the team.
Lt. Cmdr. Kevin J. Davis of Pittsfield, Mass., was in his second year with the Blue Angels, the team known for its high- speed, aerobatic demonstrations, Lt. Cmdr. Garrett Kasper said. Davis spent his first year in training.
The crash happened as the team was performing its final maneuver Saturday afternoon during the air show. The team’s six pilots were joining from behind the crowd of thousands to form a triangle shape known as a delta, but Davis’ jet did not join the formation.
Moments later, his jet crashed just outside Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, hitting homes. Eight people on the ground were injured.

Gas pumped up by over 8 cents a gallon
Gasoline prices have gone up more than 8 cents a gallon across the country the last two weeks and are up 69 cents so far this year, according to a survey released Sunday.

Police name suspect in Peace Corps killing
Philippine police identified a local woodcarver as a suspect in the killing of a U.S. Peace Corps volunteer in a northern mountain village and are following up leads on a possible accomplice, officials said today.
Senior Superintendent Pedro Ganir, police chief of Ifugao province, where Julia Campbell’s body was found last week in a shallow grave, named the suspect as Juan Dontugan, 25, from the village of Batad in Banaue township.
“We have leads that he was not alone,” Ganir told The Associated Press in a telephone interview but refused to elaborate.
A police autopsy indicated that multiple blows to the head with a blunt instrument killed Campbell. Her arms also were injured, indicating that she tried to block the blows, police said.

Talky British national faces deportation
A British national was arrested after he told a newspaper that he was “lucky” to have escaped the notice of immigration authorities despite a drug conviction.
Calvin Alexander Lee, who immigrated 24 years ago, was arrested by federal immigration officials Friday at his Huntington Beach home and faces deportation proceedings, officials said.
Lee, 41, was quoted in an Orange County Register story last month about legal U.S. residents being deported as a result of new immigration-screening measures.
Lee told the newspaper he was jailed five years ago on felony drug charges. Such offenses are usually grounds for deporting noncitizens.

Ex-premier blocked from Bangladesh
Bangladesh’s former prime minister was blocked from boarding a flight home from London on Sunday after her country’s military-backed interim government banned her from returning.
Sheikh Hasina had vowed to go home from a private trip abroad to fight charges of corruption and abetting the murder of four protesters during riots. But last week, the Bangladesh government barred her return and asked airlines not to allow her on any flight to the country.
Bangladesh’s government moved last week to force both Hasina and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia – longtime rivals who have dominated their country’s politics for 15 years – into exile.
Zia and Hasina head the country’s largest political parties. Their supporters fought deadly street battles that prompted an interim government to adopt emergency rule in January and delay national elections.
