Police have issued a warning to joggers, bicyclists and the homeless that the Cherry Creek ditch and bike path could become flooded this morning.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will release a high volume of water today out of Cherry Creek Reservoir which could cause the creek to overflow its banks until late morning.

Joggers and bicycle commuters are warned not to drop down into the sunken creek bed but to stay on the surface roads. Police are attempting to remove any homeless people who may be sleeping along the banks or under bridges.

The high water volume will take several hours to work its way from the reservoir about 12 miles down to the South Platte River near the intersection of Speer Boulevard and Interstate-25.

The creek and bike path should be safe to use this afternoon.
