President Bush and Congress have designated May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week of May 13-19 as Police Week. To coincide, Senate Joint Resolution 39 has proclaimed the same dates for Colorado to give recognition to peace officers’ commitment to serving and protecting citizens against “violence, disorder, and deception.” The measure also recognizes officers who have “made the supreme sacrifice or who have been disabled in the line of duty.”

The resolution names the 211 Colorado peace officers who have been killed while serving, beginning in 1876 with Charles Faber of Bent County.
