CENTENNIAL, Colo.-
A former Hurricane Katrina evacuee charged with murder in the slaying of a convenience store clerk has pleaded not guilty.
John Andrew Doubleday, 24, is charged with first-degree murder, felony murder and aggravated robbery in the Dec. 10 slaying of Jutte Gallegos Burton, 62, at 7-Eleven store in the Denver suburb of Aurora.
He entered a not-guilty plea on Monday and the judge scheduled a trial for Oct. 9.
Police identified Doubleday from a surveillance video from the store. The video showed a man walking into the store and exchanging a few words with Burton before firing a gun into her back.
Two other people, Amie Renee Lewis and Jonathan A. Ortiz, face charges of being an accessory to murder.
Police said Doubleday and Lewis came to Colorado after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August 2005. Lewis’ son, who was 1 at the time of the robbery, was placed in state custody after the arrests.
