ASPEN, Colo.-

The Woody Creek Tavern, a favorite hangout of the late writer Hunter S. Thompson, may soon change hands.

Tavern co-owner Shep Harris told the Aspen Times in Tuesday’s editions that the owners of the Wienerstube restaurants in Aspen and nearby Basalt have made an offer on the establishment.

Harris wouldn’t discuss the price and said the deal wasn’t a certainty.

“We’re still in limbo here,” he said.

The tavern has been a fixture of the Aspen area for nearly three decades. Thompson, who lived nearby, was a regular. Former Enron CEO Kenneth Lay, who owned homes and property in Aspen, sometimes dined there.

Thompson committed suicide at his Owl Farm home in February 2005. Lay died of heart disease in July while vacationing in Aspen, two months after he was convicted of fraud and other charges in Enron’s collapse. The conviction was vacated after his death.
