
Portland pitcher Jack Cassel gave up only two hits in five innings Sunday, helping the Beavers blank the visiting Colorado Springs Sky Sox 2-0 in a Triple-A Pacific Coast League game. It was Portland’s fourth shutout in eight games.
Cassel (3-2) has not allowed an earned run in 18 consecutive innings for Portland (15-15).
Sky Sox starter Ubaldo Jimenez (1-3) allowed two runs, four hits and five walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out six.
Colorado Springs (10-17) has the PCL’s worst record.
Denver-area divers selected for U.S. team
Ohio State-bound Sean Moore, a senior at Regis High School, and Drew Brown, a Grandview senior who will attend the University of Minnesota, were selected for the United States diving team that will compete at the Summer World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand, scheduled for Aug. 8-18.
Moore and Brown will be among nearly 140 U.S. athletes at the U.S. Olympic Committee-sanctioned competition. The two divers will compete as a team in the men’s 3-meter synchronized springboard event.
