A Jefferson County woman shot her husband during an argument in their Coal Creek area home, authorities said Tuesday.

Stephen Palumbo, 42, called police Monday at about 7:05 p.m. to report that he had been shot by his wife, Tamara Palumbo, 45, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived they found Stephen Palumbo conscious and lying in the backyard of 11688 Crescent Park Circle, said Jacki Kelley, a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Tamara Palumbo was found unconscious on the kitchen floor. The couple were taken to a local hospital where they remained Tuesday, Kelley said. Authorities expect both to recover.

Climber dies after Humboldt Peak rescue

A 38-year-old mountaineer who spent a night out in a heavy snowstorm after falling an estimated 200 feet on Humboldt Peak has succumbed to his injuries, officials said Tuesday.

David Worthington apparently slipped on the snowy slopes of the 14,064-foot mountain in the Sangre de Cristo range on Sunday morning.

Rescuers couldn’t reach him until late Monday afternoon because of the storm, which dropped 18 inches in places.

Worthington’s hiking companion, whose name was not disclosed, wrapped him in two sleeping bags and then had to return to the trailhead and drive to Westcliffe to notify authorities some five hours after the fall, according to Kristina Geroux, communications supervisor for the Custer County Sheriff’s department.

Rescuers were delayed by the storm and avalanche conditions.

ID sought for 2 bodies found in apartment

The Arapahoe County coroner is still trying to positively identify two people found dead Sunday night in an apartment on South Bannock Street.

Autopsies were completed on Monday, but coroner’s officials are withholding the cause of death for both the man and woman and referred inquiries to the Englewood Police Department.

Englewood police Investigator John Hoehler said the deaths were considered a “strange case” and witnesses who know the two people are still being located for interviews.

On Monday, police revealed that at least one of the dead was considered a homicide case but would not reveal whether the second person’s death was also considered a homicide.

Home-invasion suspect arrested

A more than 12-hour search for the suspect in an apparent home invasion and robbery in Denver ended Tuesday, after a police dog looking underneath a mobile home found the man hiding and bit him on the arm.

The incident began about 8 p.m. Monday when a homeowner realized he was being robbed. Police say he followed the two suspects out of the home and pursued them in his own vehicle, exchanging gunfire.

Denver police spokeswoman Virginia Quiñones said no one was reported as being shot.

Authorities eventually convinced the homeowner to abandon his pursuit, and officers later caught and arrested one of the suspects.

A second suspect was believed to be in or near the Foxridge Mobile Home Park, where residents were urged to stay inside their homes unless they had a police escort to leave for work or school.

The homeowner was not expected to face any charges.
