Jackson, Wyo. – Think of it as Aspen in cowboy boots, only with better fishing.
Sporting several layers of glitz, Jackson no longer fits easily into its time-honored trappings of the Old West – although it still makes a mighty try. Fancy restaurants, swanky shops and glitzy galleries now line the boardwalks once ruled by western wear.
One thing that hasn’t changed much is the fishing.
Among the more common summer sights are vehicles trailing drift boats, off to a variety of prime destinations matched by few places in America.
Jackson sparkles as the southern gateway to Yellowstone National Park, with its geologically diverse rivers and lakes. The delights of the South Fork of the Snake River or the Henry’s Fork in Idaho are barely an hour-and-a-half away. Even the upper Madison River can be gained in three hours.
It takes no more than two hours to launch on the upper Green or the New Fork, and less to reach the oft-overlooked Greys. If that doesn’t fill the month, there are dozens of smaller creeks to change the pace or wilderness excursions to last a lifetime.
Thing is, you can bring either your Justins or Guccis. Or maybe even both.
